England-Vs-Russia--Grey

Because the Russian referee had some items stolen in a previous match, I was one of the police security on the dressing rooms for the International on October 22nd 1958.

A door at the back of the Stadium leads into a tunnel with the dressing rooms on either side . In the England dressing room there was a whole pile of England caps on a table and as far as I could see they were not marked for the individual player.

It raised the interesting question of what the player would do if he was a size seven and there was only a size six left.

When the teams lined up in the tunnel to go up and on to the pitch, Billy Wright the England captain, closing in on his 100th International,  was at the back with his Russian counterpart, holding the pennants that they were going to exchange chattering away in their own language but seeming to understand each other.

I seem to remember that Lofthouse had a cut to be treated at halftime but insisted on having a drink first. He was back heading the ball in the second half.

We were able to lock the dressing rooms and go to the end of the tunnel to watch the match.I still have the autographed programme.
